    Thank. You.

Like when people say “They” should go back to their own country…
i say, *’After you, my dear Alphonse…’
Or that immigrants are taking everything away from “Us”.
Because we’ve never stolen anything from anyone- except land, cuisine, women, culture, dignity, sovreignty, freedom and so on.

*That’s the title of a powerful short story by Shirley Jackson.

Xenophobe-mania is a strange phenomenon. The history of the U.S. is kinda like an extended game of king of the hill. The Bering Straits traversers held the first title in 9500 B.C. Then the Vikings tried to bail up, but the weather was too hot or something. Then the Spaniards rolled up looking for gold, the fountain of youth, and ended up slaughtering untold numbers. Then the Brits rolled up hard eying an empire expansion. Then more Brits came over and beat up the first wave. Now the home-grown fascists are laying waste to the land.

But… it is the fault of the invading Latin American hordes that the country is going down the tubes (according to Pat Buchanan and the prematurely ejaculating Minutemen).

As an English teacher, I know exactly what you mean.
You wouldn’t believe the amount of latent racism that I encounter in casual conversation when I tell people what I do. “Yeh, well that’s good your teaching them immigrants to speak good English”. It never ceases to distirb me how those most virulently in favour of immigrants learning to speak “good English” are barely articulate or comprehensible themselves. You’d think they’d have some empathy – having found the language so intimidating and difficult to lesrn themselves (even if it is their first and only language).

I love that cartoon. It smacks down the short sighted logic of these english only fools.

Tangentially related: It is pathetic that we wait until the onset of adolescence to offer any true language curricula to our children. It makes no sense from an intellectual point of view. However, if your goal is to educate consumers rather than thinkers, it makes good sense.

Ant: The Xenophobic brainwash conditioning victims have a narrow view of history. Anglo-centrists, the nativists, and the Buchanan brigade fear what they do not understand. I wonder if they will embrace affirmative action policies in 2042 when they are in the racial minority.

qazse: A cursory review of the Education 2000 Initiative and No Child Left Behind demonstrates a concerted effort to dumb down every child in government schools. California’s recent attempt to punish home schoolers reflects the fear that officials have of an educated populace. A brain-dead, non-thinking, obedient citizenry is much easier to manipulate and deceive.
