Shadow Factory Revelations: The Illegal NSA Domestic Spy Dragnet

Recently, additional news has surfaced regarding the government’s unlawful domestic surveillance operations. A former NSA analyst and whistle-blower, Russell Tice, has revealed that the government’s illegal spying on Americans is far more pervasive than previously known. In a brazen display of arrogance, government officials who have sworn to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution, are routinely violating their duties and responsibilities to the American people.

Information regarding the unconstitutional NSA surveillance program has been steadily trickling out for the past several years. Of particular import is the 2005 New York Times story that broke the news of illegal domestic spying, the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s lawsuit detailing information that AT&T allowed the government to surreptitiously monitor the phone and internet communications of AT&T customers without warrants, and the revelations in James Bamford’s books uncovering the widespread incompetence and illegality of NSA domestic intelligence gathering operations.

Russell Tice, the NSA whistle-blower, recently appeared on Keith Olbermann’s MSNBC program and provided shocking details about information he uncovered during his tenure at the spy agency. According to Tice, organizations, news agencies, and journalists were targeted with a 24/7 data-collection dragnet despite evidence of criminal or terror-related involvement. Compartmentalization procedures were employed to prevent him (and other analysts) from knowing the full extent of the unlawful NSA domestic spying operations.

According to Tice, “The National Security Agency had access to all Americans’ communications — faxes, phone calls, and their computer communications. It didn’t matter whether you were in Kansas, in the middle of the country, and you never made foreign communications at all. They monitored all communications.”

Tice revealed that the information gathered by the NSA sweep is “digitized and put on databases.” A $130 million, the 470,000-square-foot facility in San Antonio is being built to warehouse the spy data. NSA’s new Texas Cryptology Center will employ 1,500 people and “may eventually be able to hold all the information in the world.” According to James Bamford, the author of “Shadow Factory“, the goal is to know “exactly what Americans were doing day by day, hour by hour, and second by second… where they shopped, what they bought, what movies they saw, what books they read, the toll booths they went through, the plane tickets they purchased, the hotels they stayed in… In other words, Total Information Awareness, the same Orwellian concept that John Poindexter had tried to develop while working for the Pentagon’s [Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency].”

Despite George W. Bush’s previous assurances to the contrary, The NSA has been violating the rights of American (non-terrorist) citizens for years. The false-flag 9-11 attack on America was a pretext for legislation and unconstitutional executive actions designed to erode the rights of average Americans. With Osama bin Laden still on the loose (wink-wink), the military submerged in two far-and-away imperialist quagmires, and the economy in free-fall, the blatant assault on individual rights and privacy is, unfortunately, a minor blip on most Americans’ radar screens.

The Commutation of Ramos and Compean

ramos-and-compean

In an appeasement measure designed to repair Bush’s failed legacy with throngs of lobotomized Americans, the sentences of border agents Compean and Ramos have been commuted. The case was the cause célèbre of the xenophobic, far-right, hate Hispanics first crowd. Rarely were the facts discussed when the isolationist tard-muffins cried for the pardoning of these jury-convicted felons.

On Feb. 17, 2005, Aldrete-Davila led Border Patrol agents on a high-speed car chase that ended at a ditch about 120 yards from Mexico. Aldrete-Davila abandoned a van with 743 pounds of marijuana inside and made a dash for the border. Compean, on foot, intercepted Aldrete-Davila, who put his hands in the air to surrender. At that point, according to trial testimony, Compean tried to hit Aldrete-Davila with the butt of his shotgun, missed, and fell into the 11-foot-deep ditch. Aldrete-Davila took off running. Compean climbed out of the ditch, shot at him 14 times and missed. Ramos, who had watched Compean fall, then fired once. The bullet entered Aldrete-Davila’s left buttock, severed his urethra and came to rest in his right thigh. He fell down, but got back up, escaping across the Rio Grande into Mexico. The two agents then covered up the incident. Compean hid some of the shell casings and asked a third agent returning to the scene later that day to dispose of the rest. Neither Ramos nor Compean ever reported the shooting.

So, two agents of the U.S. government shot and wounded an unarmed man, tampered with the crime scene to conceal their criminal actions, and neglected to report the incident as required by law. The clamor for their release was predicated solely on the fact that the drug-smuggler was a Hispanic from south of the border. Had this incident occurred on the northern U.S. border with an unarmed Canadian suspect, these two men would not be household names.

According to the mentally deranged Bush Worldview, violent crimes perpetrated by government actors against brown-skinned individuals from foreign nations simply aren’t punishable. The wholesale slaughter of thousands of innocents and non-combatants in Afghanistan and Iraq are a testament to this perverse, anti-humanitarian, false concept of U.S. and international law exclusion.

Where was the Middle-America outrage at the routine unprovoked Blackwater mercenary bloodbaths, the U.S. military airplane bombing deaths of 45 Iraqi wedding participants, and countless other egregious displays of death and dismemberment courtesy of the Pentagon war machine? Too far from home I guess. Maybe the “War of Terror” dehumanization programming succeeded in reducing the value of human beings demonized by the Bushco./Neo-con propagandists.

The xenophobic seal-the-border crowd were whipped into an orgasmic hate-frenzy over the border agent “political prisoners” who, according to their degenerate assessment, did the American people a public service by shooting that dirty Mexican drug dealer. The media echo-chamber pummeled Americans daily with one-sided frothing at the mouth rhetoric clamoring for the border agents release (e.g., pseudo-journalists like Lou Dobbs). Of course the facts of the case were conveniently glossed over so as not to provide an objective account of the agents’ unlawful use of force, evidence tampering, and attempted cover-up.

The pervasive influence of the collective-stamped majority opinion is a powerful tool for the consensus trance engineers. Attitudes, opinions, and beliefs are extremely susceptible to manipulation by the Fourth Estate. The Government/Media complex has a vested interest in maintaining the fraudulent U.S. vs. Them idealogical divide. Without the shadow of an ever-looming enemy of the state, the political puppeteers find it much harder to legitimize abject criminality and senseless slaughter under the guise of U.S. moral superiority.

president-for-dummiesThe soon to be unemployed disgrace known as George W. Bush has once again demonstrated the hypocrisy and arrogance of American elitism by excusing another Executive branch crime.

As we move into a new political era on January 20 (and celebrate the passage into the Aquarian Zodiac station), the opportunities to reverse the disastrous course of America’s foreign and domestic policies are upon us. Let’s hope Obama rejects W’s pardon application when it hits his desk.

I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we’re really talking about peace ~ George W. Bush (June 18, 2002)

Denver DNC Police Brutality Caught on Film

The video shows a Code Pink protester being violently attacked by a law enforcement officer during the Denver Democratic National Convention. Although the woman may have ignored a lawful order to disperse, the response was egregious and criminal. The officer forcefully shoved a night stick into the the woman’s chest knocking her onto the pavement.

In the recent months, an increasing number of unlawful assaults and batteries have been committed by law enforcement officers. Thanks to the prevalence of camera phones and the Youtube, many of these abuses have been brought to the public’s attention.

In a free society, it is critical that those tasked with the responsibility of enforcing the laws are held to the highest standard when it comes to obeying the law and protecting the rights of the citizens. This video is a reminder to all law enforcement officers that their misdeeds may be recorded and introduced as evidence during their prosecution.

Courthouse Confessions

There is a flippin’ sweet website that I read about called Courthouse Confessions. Steven Hirsch, a photojournalist, interviews cats on their way out of the courthouse. He posts a picture of the defendant, and a narrative of the events (in their own words), leading up to, and following, their arrest. I can sympathize with this fella’s plight.

My name is Mark Mark Mark. I was walking down Ludlow Street and uh I guess a Police Officer who I’ve had interactions actions with in the past spotted me and followed me about four or five blocks, uh watched me take a pee in an alley in some garbage, in the rain and then followed me another two blocks and then put handcuffs on me and then took me to jail for which I spent twenty hours in a holding cell.

Twenty hours in a thirty man cell, it’s freezing cold for taking a pee when there’s no public restrooms available is pretty bogus. I think if you’re going to arrest someone for having to go to the bathroom you should maybe provide public toilets. I’m from San Francisco, they have pay toilets there at least on the street. There’s no business that will open their restrooms to non paying customers. So if I don’t have five dollars to buy a sandwich and I have to go to the bathroom I guess that means I’m going to go jail.

I was going to say I watched my urine get washed away in the rain as my handcuffs were being put on me, it’s pretty ironic, you know. my crime was erased and I was going to jail for a few hours, twenty hours. A dog can take a pee and I can’t. I guess they have more rights then I do. Right. I’m watching a cop ride a horse taking a dump that I got to ride over on my bicycle and I can’t take a piss on a pile of trash. You know. Fuck.

The homeless in NYC are pretty much SOL when it comes answering nature’s call. I reckon that is why a lot of those cats make water in their britches – to avoid incarceration. Mark Mark Mark has a point about the copper’s horses though.

Velvet Underground – I’m Waiting for the Man

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

Plenty of laudatory ink has dried on the page detailing the Velvet Underground’s far-reaching influence on dozens of bands and their faithful devotees. The Warhol Factory-spawned bastard godfathers of punk violently redefined the sleepy-eyed mid-60s rock n’ roll landscape.

Lou Reed penned anthems that plumbed the depths of NYC depravity. The junkies, the fairies, and the tranny street hustlers were central characters in Velvet Underground’s blight-ridden narratives. More than a few well-adjusted middle-class teenagers got their initiation into the world of S&M with VU lyrics describing “shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather” and the “whiplash girl-child in the dark.”

I’m Waiting for the Man is choice track that details the adventures of a White junkie attempting to procure a $26 bag of smack in Harlem. After being accosted by neighborhood residents for chasing the dark-skinned ladies, the “big straw hat” wearing narcotics provider strolls up to deliver the protagonist his liberation powder. Reed’s vocal delivery bounces between panic-stricken urgency and bag-in-hand elation. The frenetic musical accompaniment intensifies the feeling of lurking danger during the uptown score.

While in NYC a few years back, I made a musical pilgrimage to the Man’s designated black-market intersection (Lexington Avenue and 125th Street). Instead of taking the taxi to LGA, I jumped on the A Train up to Harlem. Sadly, there was an Old Navy staring at me as I emerged from the subway. The landscape has changed considerably, but I am sure there is plenty of horse changing hands in El Barrio.

I’m waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I’m waiting for my man

Hey, white boy, what you doin’ uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin’ our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it’s the furthest from my mind
I’m just lookin’ for a dear, dear friend of mine
I’m waiting for my man

Here he comes, he’s all dressed in black
PR shoes and a big straw hat
He’s never early, he’s always late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait
I’m waiting for my man

Up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody’s pinned you, but nobody cares
He’s got the works, gives you sweet taste
Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste
I’m waiting for my man

Baby don’t you holler, darlin’ don’t you bawl and shout
I’m feeling good, you know I’m gonna work it on out
I’m feeling good, I’m feeling oh so fine
Until tomorrow, but that’s just some other time
I’m waiting for my man

I’d harbored the hope that the intelligence that once inhabited novels and films would ingest rock. I was, perhaps, wrong ~ Lou Reed

Mugshot Mania

One of my favorite websites is The Smoking Gun. They publish mug shots, arrest reports, court documents, and other interesting public records. Here are a few mug shots that I dug up. The captions below the photos are an attempt at humor and are not to be considered assertions of fact.
